Unity Fundamentals

  • Unity defines God as Spirit, Creator, Source, Divine Mind, Life, Light, Love, Energy, Principle, Omnipresence, Omnipotence, and Omniscience.
  • God’s will for everyone is Joy, Life, and Plenty.
  • God is good and God is in and through all.
  • Unity proclaims the divinity of Jesus, and teaches that like Jesus, we are all children of God, divine in nature and with the potential to express God’s goodness.
  • Unity acknowledges Jesus as wayshower, teacher, and elder brother.
  • Unity believes the body to be the “temple” of God, created to express harmony, life and perfection.
  • Unity believes the mind is our connecting link with God or Divine Mind.
  • Unity denies the existence of any power or presence opposed to God; God is all.
  • Unity believes sin is used in its original meaning of “missing the mark”, is not permanent.

Prayer
A technique that expands and transforms our minds, where we commune with God directly, and experience oneness with God within ourselves.  Prayer is a way of bringing the mind into alignment with the mind of God.

Meditation

A way of bringing the mind into oneness with God; union with God where we are whole and healthy.  Meditation is done through going within, relaxing the mind and body, finding our spiritual center, and achieving a sense of oneness which we then bring into the outer world

Healing
We believe there is no condition beyond the power of God to heal.  The body is the
temple of God in which the mind and spirit also reside.  Prayer for healing will always be effective, though it may not take the form we envision.

Forgiveness
It is only through forgiveness we can find freedom and wholeness.  We must first forgive ourselves in order to forgive others. The greatest gift we can give is our faith that God’s healing love is at work within all situations and will bring forth peace and harmony. We need only remove ourselves from being an obstacle in God’s way.

Bible

Unity has a metaphysical approach to the Bible, i.e. we look for the spiritual; meaning underlying everything.  We do not use a literal interpretation. We consider the Bible to be our basic textbook for the teaching of Truth and a manual for the unfoldment of the human soul.

Diversity

We are all children and creations of God.  God is not limited by our perceptions.  God is the only presence and power in the universe, and as such does not create bad or evil people.  We are all divine, and need only to be aware of who we truly are.
